Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I can tell you for sure that, me, and most if not all Israelis are praying for peace every day. I cannot estimate what are the chances or when but I really hope that we will see peace. Sooner is better.

What's Iran's role now in the Middle East after the deal was signed and the sanctions were lifted? Is Hamas the winner here?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

As I said before, Iran is very involved in the Middle East. Iran is financing terror. A lot of terror.

is there rlly no way to just proactively destroy every tunnel? how can there not be tech for that

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I think I answered that already. See below.

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I went down south, was supposed to enter Gaza Friday night, we got in on Shabbat, right after Shabbat on Saturday night.

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

Hello everyone. I was positioned, 2nd in command in the intelligence department the Galile division, and one day after the 3 boys were kidnapped and was in an operation to search and find them. We started having rockets shooting from the south, from Gaza in to Israel. After 2.5 weeks, the government decided we had to stop those launches. So I got a phone call from my brigade commander. I was positioned, before that between 2011-2013 an intelligence officer w. infantry brigade. he said "I'm entering Gaza tonight, come I need you with me." I said I'm up north. He said "I didn't ask you where you are, I need you with me."

How do you feel now, in 2016? Do you think the situation is getting better now?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

Unfortunately, i believe our enemies are still arming themselves, digging tunnels - by the way, stealing their people's concrete that goes into Gaza to rebuild homes and facilities, they're stealing or taking by force this concrete to build terror tunnels. It goes back to what we said, these are enemies that don't value their own people. I believe they are trying to get stronger and stronger. Hopefully we will not have another war in the near future.

With relations between Hamas and Egypt also very strained, what intermediaries now can effectively handle communications between Israel and Hamas leadership?

Picture?1392135420

Has Israel developed technology that will allow detection of Hamas tunnels before the tunnels reach homes in Israel near Gaza?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I believe that are trying to find a solution. If anyone here can offer something, I'm sure we'd be happy to hear about it.

what is a bigger threat? syria assad or hezbolllah?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I think today, when Assad and Hezbollah are in cooperation, the answer is they are a threat. They are working together, Hezbollah is fighting the Syrian people with Assad's machine. Therefore, they are a threat. But we think Hezbollah is most serious threat in the area at the moment.

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

They are threatening Israel in the same way they are threatening the modern world. They are looking at making more and more terror attacks, not only fighting on the ground. They might try - or have tried already - to achieve some terror attacks into Israel, even serious ones. But i think ISIS should be in everybody's head as a threat to the entire modern western world and culture. This is how it should be treated and this is how it should be taken care of.

If Iran were to attack Israel, how would they do it??

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I don't know what they have. I don't know how they use it. I don't know what their plans are. I don't know how they would attack Israel, if at all. I would say that Iran, you can say Iran is attacking Israel. Iran is financing terror and terror organizations all around the world. And in the Middle East, Iran is financing and supplying Hezbollah. They are supplying a huge amount of the global terror. You could say Iran is attacking Israel even today by financing those organizations.

thanks! is there a limit to the number of rockets israel can protect itself against per day?

why does hamas keep working so hard on tunnels that dont work so well?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I'm not sure what you mean "not working so well." Hamas sees the tunnels as a great way to pass under our forces and hit civilian populations inside Israel. Me, I look at tunnels as a cowardly action. If you want to fight, come out and fight, army against army, weapon against weapon. This is a cowardly action to dig. We are in our territory and defending it. You're digging under to attack unprotected civilians, old people, children, women, etc. They believe next time they'll do better. Therefore they continue working to build tunnels.

Blue user icon

what does hamas have to do with the stabbings?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

Hamas at the least encouraged those stabbings and telling people over and over again in the media and on social media to go out and do more and more. I cannot say that Hamas is responsible as an organization sending its people to stab people, but at least they are encouraging them, they are paying the families of terrorists, like they pay any terrorists' families, etc.

What did you think of the world's reaction to Israel's response to Hamas' rocket campaign?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

We put a lot of effort and money to make sure that our efforts didn't hurt anyone except terrorists themselves. I can tell you from personal knowledge that more than once we put our soldiers' lives at risk and did not open fire until we were 100 percent sure that what we saw in front of us was the enemy. We did not take those actions because of the world reaction. Not at all. We did because these are our values. That is who we are. Whoever was exposed to that must see the truth - Hamas used civilians as human shields, used religious and medical facilities as military facilities, knowing that we will wait 1000 times before we attack. I think the world should have and should now be aware that the terrorists used cowardly ways and cowardly means. One is hide behind non-involved people. Unfortunately, I'm not sure everyone in the world understands that.

Did Israel win? If not, what does victory over Hamas look like? Won't there be another terrorist org to take their place?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I personally believe that we won in 2014. There's no question about it. But it is a very good question - what is winning against Hamas. When you go against someone in a war, the basic assumption is nobody wants to die. The rules of war are if you're close to your enemy dying, you can sign an agreement. When you have an enemy that wants to die, that seeks death more than life, that doesn't share our values about life, that actually values death, this is a good question. What is winning? I can tell you for sure, Hamas got a painful lesson from us they will not forget for a long time. Unfortunately, they treasure death instead of life. They put their civilians under threat, they use them as human shields, they're launching missiles and shooting from behind them, so hitting Hamas caused uninvolved people getting hurt. This is not our interest. We are trying to do whatever we can to avoid that. We won, no question about that.

Are there tunnels into Egypt? Or if you can't answer, does Hamas have better tunnel tech than Mexico?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

We know it's a fact that there were tunnels into Egypt. More than one or two. Sophisticated and very big. You could bring in a camel, maybe even a truck, not sure. And we know that the Egyptian army are doing a lot against those tunnels because it's in Egypt's interest. I can't tell you the standing of those tunnels today. I don't know whether they destroyed them all. I'm not familiar with tunnels in Mexico. I don't know what they have in Mexico.

Any comments on the story of the gay Hamas operative killed by his own people??

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I think people who kill their own people, it says a lot about them. It shows us what kind of enemy we are facing.

Blue user icon

What are the chances Hamas will resume rocket attacks in the next year?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

We believe at the moment that it's not in Hamas interest to start a new round or new war. It doesn't mean that they won't launch a missile here or there or some organization or people in Gaza are doing that. It happens from time to time. I can't say chances because no one can be so exact. We assume at the moment it's not in Hamas interest to start something like that. Interests in the Middle East are changing so fast. So something I say today might not be so in a week. I think Hamas is not looking at another operation right now.

There have been some Israeli officials - present and former - who have been wondering publicly whether israel is losing its qualitative military/intelligence edge based on US hacking and an inability to innovate tunnel-finding equipment to fight terror. What's your opinion?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

I can assure you that we, with the security industry in Israel are making a lot of efforts and putting a lot of resources and money into developing an Iron Dome for tunnels. It's not as simple as it sounds. There are a lot of things you have to take into account and our best minds are working it out.

Picture?1390920615

Can you tell us about the tunnels you found? Were Hamas terrorists in them at the time?

Flag of israel.svg
lt. col. shlomi b.

Most tunnels we discovered were empty when we did that. At least one tunnel was used by Hamas while we were taking care of it. They understood that we were about to blow the tunnel and they took advantage of the lag of the time it takes us to take care of the tunnel and terrorists came out of the tunnel on our side and attacked on our side of the border and killed 5 of our soldiers.

Lt. Col. Shlomi B., from the IDF Intelligence Corps was on the front lines in 2014, fighting Hamas terrorists who were launching rockets at Israel by the thousands and infiltrating Israel’s borders through a complex series of tunnels. Shlomi and his team, while fighting in Gaza, uncovered four terror tunnels leading into Israel.

What was it like fighting a terrorist enemy threatening millions of Israeli civilians? How many terror tunnels might still remain and what is Israel doing to prevent another war with Hamas on the Southern border and Hezbollah or even ISIS in the north?

Ask him anything, this Thursday at 12:00, only on MySababa.
