Everyday we have a new story that gives us hope and more power to continue our mission. We believe we are in the right way for that when we approached a bereaved family member- a Palestinian mother who had lost two sons- she was so angry and didn't even believe that the other side was human. She participated The Narrative Project and told her story and she noticed the Israeli mothers start to cry when she told her story. One of the mother's got up and went to hug her. She was shocked. She never expected that to happen and with that she began to understand that there as no difference. She ended up joining the Parent's Circle and became very active.
There exists, in the European mind, a dissonance with regard to the Middle East, the Muslim World and its profusion of conflicts. It is partly that of a sense of guilt due to our level of peace and comfort in these pampered lands and it is also due to something much darker.
I suffer from moral equivalence, generally it is a good thing but it is easily hijacked. We are moved by the plight of Syrian refugees and the terror they have suffered to escape the hell that Syria has become. That is natural, that is a good reaction. But each day I am pulled this way and that by various media reports and have difficulty getting a clear picture. I am sure it is because it is couched as a Muslim exodus. This framing is wrong, it is a multi faith and multi race exodus.
I found myself arguing on a 'Boycott Israel' forum tonight and I did not like the shrill uncompromising tone of the various correspondents. The well meaning Europeans began to sound like Trump supporters at the RNC. I had to challenge and had to take the side of Israel. I can be a bit contrarian that way.
I have no love of militant Islam. I have dear friends who are Muslim that I do love, but who fall into the that grey area, the Moderate Muslim. I presume that is term that European academics invented. I am not sure I like it. It its divisiveness in disguise.
I am not going to write a history of Middle Eastern conflicts. I am however going to ask people to think and question, to not just blindly accept the proffered images of dead babies as gospel truth. I am going to ask that people ask if there is not a central and cynical strategy at work that might or might not trace back to Wahhabis and the Muslim Brotherhood. A strategy that is taring apart the lives of people in the Middle East and North Africa.
I spent much of my life in a cult. Thought and expression were rigidly controlled. The perception of the world outside the walls carefully manipulated to keep us in a state of high anxiety and faithful to the cause of a world that would, on some glorious future date, bend to our dictats and follow our Guru. It was an unhappy place.
I see echos of this mentality in the posts and rhetoric of so many of what I must call 'Useful Idiots' It is not there own voice, It is easier to click a 'like' or denigrate opposing views with a curt vilification rather than do a bit in depth reading. Perhaps they just say what their manipulators want them to say and its is reinforced by group pressure, by the herd mentality we all fall victim to.
So on that note, with regard to the Palestinian conflict and the 'Boycott Israel' tribe, I
